Erin MacPherson is one funny lady! Her candid Christian approach to pregnancy is a great way to learn about the upcoming 9 months. With chapter titles like “The Dreaded Morning Sickness: How to Deal with Morning, Noon and Night Sickness” and “Feeding Frenzy: How to eat (er, Devour) for Two” you know you are in for a good time. After looking through all the chapters I can’t think of any thing she left out.
Erin is successfully able to tell you what the baby will really need as opposed to what you think you will need. I love that she breaks it down even farther into things you can consider buying used as opposed to ones you should never buy used like a car seat or a crib mattress. Chapter 11 is pretty funny since it’s The Christian Daddy’s Guide: What Dads-to-Be Need to know about Pregnancy. She has 4 dads who agreed to be panelists give their views on pregnancy. The panelists include such sound advice as “Making a giant batch of carnitas so your wife doesn’t have to cook all week may seem like a sweet idea, but it will only result in your eating carnitas for breakfast, lunch and dinner for a week.” Hee Hee my husband tried something simliar for me so it made me smile to read that. Guess what? It didn’t work so good for my husband either.
As a mother who couldn’t breast feed, I appreciate the section on formula feeding. I agonized over the decision to start my first on formula but 8 hours of pumping in one 24 hour period and only getting 2 oz of milk was enough for me to realize that I couldn’t keep up. I’m not going to get into the theories and the beliefs but I do appreciate when some one realizes that it’s a personal decision and there are many reasons why someone doesn’t breastfeed.
I also love that while it’s titled The Christian Mama’s Guide to Having a Baby it doesn’t come off as preachy, cheesy or geared toward any denomination in particular. I wouldn’t hesitate to give this book to any of my friends. I’m excited that while I personally am done having babies I have many friends in the last three weeks who have announced their pregnancies. I know what I’ll be giving to the expecting mothers in my life The Christian Mama’s Guide to Having a Baby!
